Mobile Phone Apps

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

Israel is nicknamed the “Start-Up Nation” because so many Internet companies found their origin in the “Land of Creation''. Though not all originated in Israel, Here are some applications you may find useful on your smartphone while visiting the country:

WhatsApp Messenger is an internationally available freeware, cross-platform centralized instant messaging (IM) and voice-over-IP (VoIP) service. It allows users to send text messages and voice messages, make voice and video calls, and share images, documents, user locations, and other content. Visitrael recommends that travelers on our tours connect with fellow travels using this app. https://www.whatsapp.com/

Gett Taxi - Uber and Lyft are not available in Israel, but about 8,000 of Israel's 25,000 cab drivers work with the app. To hail a cab, you need an Israel phone number. https://gett.com/

Waze - Always know what’s happening on the road with Waze. Even if you know the way, Waze tells you about traffic, construction, police, crashes, and more in real-time. If traffic is bad on your route, Waze will change it to save you time. https://www.waze.com

The Moovit app lets you compare public transportation options (bus, trains and other public transport), see detailed directions all the way to your destination, get ticketed and pay for your trip. It calculates passengers’ trips at the end of every month and charges them retroactively. The fare for each trip is calculated according to a new formula set by the Transportation Ministry. It calculates the cost of the trip based on the distance traveled between six zones, with a daily spending cap. Moovit has everything you need to plan, pay, and ride — all from one app — which makes getting around more convenient and efficient. https://moovitapp.com/index/en/public_transit-Israel-1

Tel-O-Fun- is a bicycle sharing service which is provided to the city of Tel Aviv, Israel. The service's main goal is to reduce motor vehicle traffic within the city. The project also aims to reduce air pollution, create a friendly atmosphere in the city, and encourage physical activity and fitness. The service name in English is a blend of the words "Tel Aviv" and the English word for pleasure "fun", in Hebrew the word "Ofan" (אופן) is wheel which is short for "Ofanayim" (אופניים) – Hebrew for Bicycle. https://www.tel-o-fun.co.il/en/

Carpool enables drivers to invite multiple passengers to join their carpool during different stages of the journey, and will also adjust the driver’s route to include High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV) lanes if the car has at least three passengers onboard

Bird is the prominent scooter operator in Israel. Its scooters are the most popular, well known, and available in the city. You need to sign up in the app before you locate the nearest scooter. You need to declare you're over 18 years old to use Bird. The city of Tel Aviv welcomes electric scooters, but there are a few important laws put in place to keep the city safe and orderly. You must wear a helmet at all times; when you get to a crosswalk – you need to get off the scooter and walk across; You must ride on the road and not the sidewalk (unless there’s a marked bike route); You must park the scooter in the marked areas only (white rectangles on the sidewalk, the apps will help you locate the nearest one). All scooters have license plates, and you can get a ticket if you’re not careful. https://www.bird.co/

Pango is a great parking app (pay and go). Not only can you pay for street parking with this app, you can also use it to pay in some parking lots. You can use it to pay for your fuel at Sonol gas stations, and there are reduced rates at certain car-wash facilities.
